The World is Flat: A Brief History of the 21st Century by Thomas Friedman. I read this last summer and I'm still thinking about it. This is one fascinating yet scary book. Friedman talks about how globalization and technological advances have leveled the playing field worldwide as far as opportunities for success. The implications for education are huge. As you read it, think about the youngest student you know and imagine what the world and job opportunities will be like for him in ten to fifteen years.
Everything Bad Is Good For You by Steven Johnson. I'm reading this now. It's about how, contraty to popular belief, pop culture is actually making us smarter. This guy throws a whole new light on video games, reality TV, and more. Wicked interesting. I have a whole new respect for all those little kids who talk incessantly about the games they play.
Coming of Age: An Introduction to the New World Wide Web edited by Terry Freedman. This is a compilation by thirteen forward-thinking educational leaders who write about aspects of Web 2.0 - the new world wide web. Lucky for you, this one's free - and online here.
Blogs, blogs, and more blogs. There are amazing people out there contributing innovative and insightful thoughts and ideas about education in this new technological learning environment. Here are a few of my favorites:
There are SO many more...if these three aren't enough for you, check on their blogs to see who these people read. The point - find out what's going on and imagine the possibilities for the education of your students.
Have a great summer.
